A special investigation team (SIT) on Wednesday submitted a charge sheet against activist Teesta Setalvad, retired director general of police R B Sreekumar and former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in a case of alleged fabrication of evidence in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots cases.

The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) today recorded the statement of former Gujarat Minister Maya Kodnani, an accused in a 2002 post-Godhra riot case. The statement was recorded on a complaint filed by Zakia, whose husband Ehsan Jaffery, a former Congress MP was killed along with 69 others in a riot at Gulburg Society in Ahmedabad, SIT officials said.

Magistrate R C Bapat-Sarkar acquitted the accused after the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them. According to the prosecution, on January 11, 1993, a group of 50-100 people took out a `morcha' at Lower Parel, Western Mumbai, pelted stones and shouted slogans against a particular community. The crowd pelted stones at buildings housing members of the minority community. Defence counsel J K Tandulekar said the 35 accused had been falsely implicated.

A prime witness in the 1993 riots case identified Shiv Sena leader Madhukar Sarpotdar before a special riots court in Mumbai on Friday.Police Inspector Madhav Khanolkar told the court that he was on duty on December 27, 1992, when a mob of people from the Ganesh Utsav Samiti Mandal gathered near the Ganesh temple in suburban Kherwadi area of Mumbai. He said that Sarpotdar, one K P Naik and Ramesh Pawar from the Sena were present with the trustees of the Mandal.

A special court in Gujarat on Wednesday convicted 31 of the 73 accused in the 2002 Sardarpura post-Godhra riot case in which 33 people of a minority community were burnt alive. The quantum of punishment is likely to be pronounced later in the day by principal District and Session Judge S C Srivastava after hearing the convicts. Out of the 42 acquitted, 11 were freed due to lack of evidence, while 31 were given the benefit of doubt.
